I think that educators should be held accountable for their successes and failures, but measuring that in the climate we have today is not possible. Who would do the measuring? I don't trust those in charge to do it. Also, I teach English as a Second Language. Who decides whether I am doing a good job or not?
I truly think that parents need to take responsibility for the education of their children. Kids should be allowed to fail. what incentive do kids have to do well in school? They know that they will be passed on no matter what--at least until they reach high school, and by then, it is too late to really help them. That would get parents more involved in their children's education.

CBS News’ “Where America Stands” series recently focused on education, reporting that despites decades of reforms and billions of dollars of investment only 34 percent of 8th graders are proficient in math, 29 percent in science and 33 percent in reading, placing American students 21st out of 30 in science and 25th in math. Others blame the problem on the fact that few of the country’s brightest go into teaching because of low salaries. Washington, D.C., school Chancellor Michelle Rhee said, "In society there is not a particularly high regard for education,” but thinks one solution is to treat education like business, including making educators accountable for their successes and failures.

QUESTION: What is the most important steps we can take in the United States to improve our schools?

Ed Amatetti on "BOOK EVERY STUDENT READ BEFORE GRADUATING HIGH SCHOOL."

I would like to begin by suggesting "Democracy In America," by Alexis de Tocqueville. The book reads like an external assessment of workings and performance of the young U.S. republic, and provides insights into what makes the new American society unique from the perspective of a citizen of Old Europe. It talks about unique and wonderful aspects of American society we too often take for granted such as: the leveling effects of free markets, free association replacing authority, rich and poor associating together (the classless society), role of family, role of religion leading to liberty, and bottom-up approach to governing from the comunity to the state to the country. De Tocqueville also warns about how the American system could break down; emphasizing moral structure, loss of temperance and self-restrianl, and complacency, among other threats.
